Joan Toglia
Peii Chen
Joan Toglia PhD, OTR/L, FAOTA is Professor and Dean Emerita of the School of Health & Natural Sciences at Mercy College in Dobbs Ferry, New York. She is also an Adjunct Clinical Professor of Cognitive Science in Rehabilitation Medicine at Weill Cornell Medical College. Dr. Toglia has over 40 years of experience in Occupational Therapy and is internationally recognized as a leader in the rehabilitation of persons with cognitive-perceptual deficits. Dr. Toglia’s dissertation from Teachers College, Columbia University was focused on Dynamic Assessment and Spatial Neglect. She has over100 publications within the field including journal articles, assessments, book chapters, and books. She has also presented over 300 workshops and lectures around the world on cognitive-perceptual rehabilitation, focusing on theory, assessment methods, and intervention strategies to support and optimize cognitive-perceptual function across different ages and diagnostic groups. She has several publications in the area of Spatial Neglect including 4 articles jointly with Dr. Chen. Dr. Toglia was honored in 2023 for revolutionizing cognitive rehabilitation theory and practice by the American Occupational Therapy Association, Award of Merit, the highest Association honor recognizing an occupational therapist who has made significant contributions to the profession. Peii Chen PhD, Peii (Peggy) Chen, PhD, is an Assistant Director at Kessler Foundation’s Center for Stroke Rehabilitation Research, the Foundation’s Intellectual Property Liaison, and a Research Associate Professor of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at Rutgers New Jersey Medical School. Dr. Chen completed her doctoral training in experimental cognitive psychology at The Pennsylvania State University in 2007. She then began her career in neuropsychological rehabilitation and has since emerged as a leading scientist specializing in spatial cognition and its disorders following brain injury, particularly stroke. Her research focuses on spatial neglect, associated impairments, and their effects on individuals’ everyday functioning and participation. She has led federally funded clinical research and clinical trials, with additional support from New Jersey State and private funding agencies. Dr. Chen is the lead developer of multiple clinical and technological innovations for the assessment and rehabilitation of spatial neglect, including the Kessler Foundation Neglect Assessment Process (KF NAP®), Prism Adaptation Treatment (KF PAT®). KF NAP provides a standardized approach for detecting and quantifying spatial neglect in real-life functional contexts, while KF PAT offers a manualized, evidence based treatment protocol. Recognizing the high prevalence and profound consequences of spatial neglect, Dr. Chen is dedicated to improving the quality of spatial neglect care by promoting consistent and accurate screening, comprehensive interdisciplinary evaluation, and the development and implementation of feasible, evidence‑based treatments.
