Do-Eat Performance Based Assessment for Children

In-Depth Training in Administration, Scoring and Clinical Interpretation

Live Virtual Course, Coming Soon in 2027

Learn to Look Beyond the Score - Observe the child, understand the performance, and guide intervention

This interactive live virtual course provides occupational therapists with practical and in-depth training in the standardized administration, scoring, and clinical interpretation of the Do-Eat assessment. The full course consists of three, 3-hour sessions including breaks.

About the Do-Eat Assessment: The Do-Eat is an ecological, performance-based assessment designed to evaluate the everyday functional performance of children aged 5–8 years. Through three structured activities—preparing a sandwich, preparing a drink, and completing a certificate activity—occupational therapists can directly observe executive functions, sensory-motor performance skills, behavioral and emotional aspects of task performance, and the level of mediation required to support successful performance. The assessment takes approximately 25–30 minutes to administer and has been studied in typically developing children and children with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD), and Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). The Do-Eat can be used across a variety of clinical, educational, and community settings, provided that the necessary materials and an appropriate workspace are available. The assessment requires simple, readily available materials, including bread, milk, and sandwich spreads. Since the assessment materials can be easily assembled using everyday materials, the Do-Eat offers an accessible and cost-effective option for occupational therapists. A distinctive feature of the Do-Eat is its ability to provide a comprehensive picture of both the child's functional performance and the underlying performance skills that may contribute to functional difficulties. By integrating quantitative scores, qualitative observations, and information about mediation needs, the assessment supports clinical reasoning, individualized intervention planning, and practical recommendations for parents and educators.

Course Description - Taught by a leading expert clinician, faculty, and researcher of performance-based assessments in children, participants will learn standardized administration procedures and actively practice scoring and interpreting a complete video-recorded assessment of the Do-Eat assessment. Clinical examples will be interwoven throughout the course and participants will have the opportunity to apply knowledge to clinical cases and scenarios. Guided case discussions will focus on identifying functional strengths and challenges, interpreting performance patterns and mediation needs, and translating assessment findings into occupation-based intervention recommendations. Following the first two sessions, participants will have the opportunity to apply the assessment in their clinical practice and submit questions in advance of the final session. The third session will address clinical questions and challenges related to administration, scoring, and interpretation. Active participation is required. Worksheet activities, scoring of clinical video, poll questions, and interactive discussions with use of the chat feature will be utilized to assess the learning outcomes stated below. Note: All participants will receive a digital participant workbook with structured activity components, including clinical interaction examples, scoring forms, and worksheets to support active participation across all sessions.
