Description: This live virtual presentation will define and describe updated conceptualizations of executive functioning as well as evidence demonstrating that executive function skills influence performance and participation across all aspects of function and populations (e.g. healthy individuals, those with chronic illness). An in-depth review of executive function (EF) skills and the interdependence of EF with memory will provide a foundation for interpretation of functional cognitive performance errors. Participants will analyze and interpret task errors and behaviors occurring during everyday situations and IADL activities using an executive functioning framework, through written case scenarios and video clips. In addition, clinical characteristics of different types of self-awareness deficits and the impact on functional cognitive performance will be addressed. This information provides a foundation for interpreting performance-based assessment results and planning functional cognitive intervention. Active participation is required. Worksheets, polling questions, and interactive discussions with use of the chat feature, will be utilized to assess learning objectives stated below. This course is a prerequisite for all other sessions. Content is based upon chapters 1-3 from the book: A Multicontext Approach to Cognitive Rehabilitation.
Audience: This course is designed for OTs, OTAs, PTs and SLPs or other Health Professionals who have at least 1 year of experience working with adolescents or adults who have functional cognitive deficits. Content level is Intermediate.

Workshop Participant Comments
“This course was truly so informative in an organized and function-driven context, it was very helpful and I look forward to attending more courses”.
“Really enjoyed the presentation style with polls, interaction, combined with slides”
“This was the best course I have taken to support my work role in many years”
“This course was “very helpful for an understanding of existing literature from diverse perspectives (and their references), practice in analyzing cases, assessment tools, and clinical implications”.
“I found the different examples of errors to be very useful in assisting with analyzing client performance across different tasks”
“ Diving into clinical examples and videos and seeing real-life people and their experiences, and then analyzing them was overall very helpful to my learning”.
This course “provided a new way to break down functional cognition -…. as well as many ways to observe what might be actually occurring during performance”.
“I thoroughly benefitted from this course. I hope to apply it all. I believe the awareness content was very impactful and began using that information the next day”
