MC Foundational Courses: Cognition and Performance

Live Virtual Courses

Part 1 Multicontext Approach (MC) Foundational Courses:  Cognition and Performance (Session 1 and 2 meets prerequisite requirements for the workshop, Fundamentals of the Multicontext Approach)

The live interactive virtual courses listed below taught by Joan Toglia PhD, OTR/L, FAOTA can be taken as stand-alone courses or as part of a 3-step certification process for the Multicontext (MC) Approach. Foundational knowledge and skills presented in session 1 will provide therapists with the ability to analyze functional task errors during performance and differentiate between different types of cognitive performance problems and awareness deficits as a foundation for the interpretation of assessment results and treatment. Session 1 is a prerequisite for all sessions and workshops. Session 2 will review performance-based functional cognitive measures with a focus on analysis of strategy use and errors and is also a prerequisite for the 2 day workshop Fundamentals of the Multicontext Approach.  Session 3 (optional prerequisite) provides an overview of different methods that can be used to promote and enhance cognitive function and participation in everyday activities. Clinical examples in these courses focus on those with acquired brain injury, however, the material is applicable across populations, including children and mental health conditions. MC CogRehab is an approved AOTA provider for distance interactive courses. Press on each link (title) below for dates, further information and details on each course. All foundational courses are taught at the intermediate level.

Required (sessions 1 & 2) and optional (session 3) prerequisite courses for the 2 day workshop, Fundamentals of the MC Approach. Courses can also “stand alone but must be taken in the sequence below.

*Session 1: Functional Cognition: Overview of Executive Function (EF), Memory, Self-Awareness and Metacognition (3 hours)

*Session 2: Functional Cognitive Performance-Based Assessment and Error Analysis (3 hours).

Session 3 (optional): Cognitive Rehabilitation Treatment Methods (3.5 hours)

 * Attendance at the 2 day workshop Fundamentals of the Multicontext Approach (Also Step 2 prerequisite for MC certification) requires the two prerequisite sessions marked with an asterisk *above (sessions 1 and 2). Session 3 is an optional prerequisite. It is expected that all candidates for certification have general knowledge and familiarity with a wide range of cognitive rehabilitation intervention methods and evidence available, prior to progressing to the step 2 prerequisite workshop (Fundamentals of the Multicontext Approach). Otherwise, session 3 is strongly recommended. The certification course (part 3) will provide in-depth (advanced) training on the implementation of occupation-based metacognitive strategy methods and the Multicontext Approach.
